The RYA courses are run by ASCSS instructors from the David Woodhead Centre in Bristol providing both on the water tuition in the Floating Harbour and on shore tuition in a classroom at Pooles Wharf.
Certificates for successful candidates are included in the course cost.
The boats used are generally Laser Bahias and will be sailed by 2 or 3 students initially with the instructor on board.
In Levels 1 and 2 in crewed boats there is a maximum of 3 students per instructor. In crewed boats Level 3 and beyond and single-handed boats the ratio is 6:1. Our courses are intended for students over 17 years old.
The course may be physically quite demanding, especially if windy.
Powerboat and Safety boat courses
The courses use both the Floating Harbour and the Cumberland Basin for practical training and a classroom at Pooles Wharf when on shore.
We use two rigid hulled planing boats for training, one with a central consul and one with tiller steering,
The Avon Scout County Sailing Section (ASCSS) provides sailing to all Scout Groups in Avon County. Our section are all volunteers who are either already members of the Scout Association (SA) or have joined the County Team as Skills Instructors.
We welcome parents and others who are interested to help rig, launch, helm (if competent) and pack away boats. If you would like to become involved, please turn up at a Taster evening and speak to the Officer of the Day or contact one of the team on the Home page.
If you already have experience sailing, we will assess you for a permit (or a course if rusty!) and if new to sailing you can learn to sail with us whilst helping. Our helms are all at least Level 2 standard and we encourage all our volunteers to continue their development through our courses, many are now instructors. We are an RYA Recognised Training Centre and as such maintain the standards of commercial centres.
